On February 15, the city held the 19th edition of the Ordre de Gatineau award ceremony. Three individuals received the city’s highest honour, meaning they were awarded for their outstanding achievements and their contribution to Gatineau. The recipients have in some way made a positive impact on the city.
“It is essential to highlight the unique and exceptional contribution of our citizens,” declared France Bélisle, former Mayor of Gatineau. “There are people who are at the heart of the vitality of our city through their extraordinary achievements and their commitment. What an honour to rub shoulders with them and to present them with the City's highest distinction, the medal of the Order of Gatineau! Dear recipients, congratulations, you make Gatineau a caring and excellent city.”
Andrée Poulin was awarded for her dedication to inspiring young people and promoting a love of reading in children. Poulin has lived in Gatineau for 30 years and has published over 60 children's books. A celebrated author in the Quebec and Canadian literary sphere, her works have been translated to several languages and published by four European publishers. She has made a cultural impact through her work both in Gatineau and worldwide.
Murielle Laberge was also awarded for her contribution to the growth of the University of Quebec in Outaouais (UQO). Laberge is the first woman to hold the position of rector at UQO. Her contributions enabled the university to grow its national influence. She contributed to educational innovation, fighting systemic discrimination, and creating a relationship and dialogue with Indigenous peoples.
The third individual awarded the medal of the Ordre de Gatineau was Raymond Brunet for his contribution to the field of construction. The general contractor was an advocate for gender equality in his field and was the first to receive the integrity designation from the Commission de la construction du Québec. His contribution has made impacts to industry at the regional and provincial levels. Brunet is known for his continued volunteer efforts to help various community organizations.
Since the creation of Ordre de Gatineau in 2005, there have been 51 recipients. Every year their names are added to an art piece called Buds and Branches by artist Sally Lee Sheeks. This work was installed in the Maison du Citoyen in 2022 to pay tribute to the recipients.
