Peekaboo, snake!

If you spot me on a walk in the Deschênes forest, you're in luck!

Many people are wrong to fear me, because I'm completely harmless, just like the other species of snake that live in Quebec.

I'm the garter snake and I'm a member of the Colubridae family.

You can recognise me by my grey or cream-coloured back, on which you can see irregular red or brown spots circled in black.

I am between 60 and 80 centimetres long.

I contribute to the ecological balance of my environment by feeding on small mammals and other small, often harmful, prey.

I am one of the many species of wildlife designated as vulnerable in Quebec. And watch out for your dogs: they hunt me.
