In a momentous decision, the National Capital Commission (NCC) Board of Directors has given the green light to a new Algonquin name for the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway. The parkway will now be known as Kichi Zībī Mīkan, meaning "Great River Road" in Algonquin. This name change pays homage to the Algonquin name for the Ottawa River, Kichi Zībī, and also honours the parkway's original designation, the Ottawa River Parkway.
The approval of this new name signifies the NCC's deep respect for the historical and cultural significance of the Ottawa River. The river has been a lifeline for generations, connecting communities, fostering relationships, and meeting the needs of the people. By adopting Kichi Zībī Mīkan as the parkway's new name, the NCC acknowledges the profound importance of the Ottawa River and its enduring role in shaping the region.
This decision follows an extensive Algonquin naming and engagement exercise, emphasizing the NCC's commitment to fostering a strong and enduring relationship with the Algonquin Nation, whose connection to the Ottawa River is deeply rooted. The approach aligns with the NCC Toponymy Policy and upholds the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls to action regarding language, culture, and commemoration.
Throughout spring 2023, the NCC actively engaged with the Algonquin community through storytelling sessions and workshops, ensuring their voices were heard and their perspectives were considered. Additionally, the NCC encouraged public engagement and gathered stories about the parkway through online platforms, public open houses, and dialogue sessions. These narratives may also contribute to the development of an interpretation plan for the parkway and the riverfront park, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.
Looking ahead, the NCC has planned a signage unveiling ceremony scheduled for September 2023. This event will provide opportunities for the Algonquin community and the public to share their stories and celebrate this significant milestone. Furthermore, a summary report featuring the outcomes of the Algonquin naming and engagement exercise, as well as the public engagement activities, is set to be released in the fall of 2023.
Tobi Nussbaum, Chief Executive Officer of the National Capital Commission, expressed the significance of renaming the parkway, stating, "Renaming this asset demonstrates the NCC's commitment to recognize and highlight Indigenous culture and heritage, particularly the Algonquin Nation as the host nation of the National Capital Region. Indigenous languages and place names carry stories and cultural references, and this provides an opportunity for meaningful reconciliation and a way to honour the history of the region."
The renaming of the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway to Kichi Zībī Mīkan marks an important step toward acknowledging and embracing the rich Indigenous heritage that permeates the National Capital Region. The NCC remains dedicated to engaging with diverse ethnocultural groups and ensuring that the region reflects the social and cultural diversity that defines Canada.
