Iconic British Pub in Aylmer to close, transform into event space amid economic challenges

The iconic British, located on Principale Street in Old Aylmer, is set to close its doors. The management announced this development on Sunday through their Facebook page, citing a combination of changing economic conditions, rising inflation, and increasing interest rates leading to higher costs for goods and overheads as the primary reasons. This announcement was made by the establishment's owner, Mike Clemann.

The British Pub and its adjoining restaurant space are set to be converted into event facilities. These spaces will host a variety of celebrations, including birthdays, weddings, music shows, entertainment events, and seasonal gatherings.

In a significant development, plans are in place to construct an 84-unit building on the current parking area of the British Hotel in Old Aylmer, as stated by the owner. Despite these changes, Clemann assures that the Café British and the rooms of the Hotel British will continue to operate as usual.

The entire British complex, which includes commercial spaces and residential units, was listed for sale last May. The asking price for the property, as indicated by Re/max Direct, was $51.7 million.

The closure of the British follows the recent announcement by L'Aubergiste, another major establishment in the area, which plans to cease operations by December 31. The owners of L'Aubergiste expressed their heartfelt sentiments, stating that they and their team are facing this closure with heavy hearts and would appreciate a wave of support and love from the community.
