Denise Simard-Lapointe, a pillar of the musical community in Gatineau, continues her inspiring work with the Grand Orchester Grande Rivière (GOGR) despite retiring from teaching this summer. Her retirement from Grande-Rivière Secondary School marks the end of an era, but her commitment to the GOGR remains unwavering.
Simard-Lapointe founded the GOGR in 2016, bringing together former students she had mentored over the decades. This intergenerational ensemble, unique in the region, includes musicians who have pursued diverse careers yet remain bonded by their shared musical foundation. The orchestra's repertoire spans classical, film music, and original compositions, showcasing the wide-ranging talents of its members.
Under Simard-Lapointe's direction, the GOGR has flourished. It quickly gained recognition, winning multiple gold medals in national competitions and captivating audiences with its dynamic performances. The orchestra, registered as a nonprofit organisation in 2018, also awards an annual scholarship to a graduating student from Grande-Rivière pursuing higher education in music. This initiative underscores Simard-Lapointe's lifelong dedication to nurturing musical talent.
Looking ahead, the GOGR resumes its activities in September, with several events planned for later in the year. Denise Simard-Lapointe's leadership remains a guiding light for the orchestra. Her vision and passion ensure that the GOGR continues to be a vibrant part of the community, fostering a love for music across generations.
