Brigil submits request to add 22 units to apartment building in their Champlain Village Urbain project

The first phases of the Champlain Village Urbain project were approved in 2015 by Gatineau’s municipal council. The first phase 1A is currently under construction and consists of seven buildings.
In November of 2022, a permit was issued by Gatineau allowing for the construction of the “Champlain 2” building with 156 units. Now Brigil is requesting an additional 22 units be added without increasing the volume or layout of the building. If accepted, this would bring the total number of units in the building to 178. According to the Service d’Urbanisme et de Développement Durable (SUDD), this modification still respects all construction regulations. The SUDD recommends the council go forward with the request.
As the building has over 100 units, this request must be approved by the municipal council. The decision will be made during the November 25 meeting at the Maison du Citoyen.
The project has been controversial as it is in the Champlain Corridor and its construction reduces the width of the ecological corridor. This prompted local community groups to protest the project two years ago.
