Birds of Île Conroy - The Great Egret
One of the most remarkable birds to be seen on Île Conroy near the Deschênes Rapids is the Great Egret.
Its immaculate white plumage, yellow-orange beak and long, stilt-like black legs set it apart.
It is a large bird, 85 to 104 cm long, with a wingspan of 140 to 170 cm.
Its wingbeats are supple, ample and slow, giving it an elegant appearance in flight. For several years now, this beautiful bird has been returning to Île Conroy in spring to nest in a small colony.
Every Wednesday in August, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., you can take part in the observation of great egrets as they return to spend the night at their dormitory on the island. The event is organized by the Club des ornithologues de l'Outaouais in conjunction with the City of Gatineau. From the parking lot at the end of Chemin Vanier, take the bike path towards the belvedere, a hundred meters to the east.
Let's take advantage of the privilege of observing so many species of waterfowl in our own environment.
