Beach season kicks off at NCC beaches

The much-anticipated opening of the National Capital Commission (NCC) beaches at Gatineau Park and Leamy Lake Park has begun, marking the start of the summer season.
From June 14 to September 2, 2024, lifeguards will be on duty from 10 am to 6 pm at Meech Lake and Philippe Lake beaches, and from 10 am to 7 pm at Leamy Lake Beach. The NCC has advised the public to exercise caution and remain within designated swimming areas to ensure safety.
In a significant change this season, Smith Beach remains closed due to ongoing rehabilitation work at the Philippe Lake camping area. This closure highlights the NCC's commitment to maintaining and improving the quality of its recreational facilities, even if it means temporary inconveniences for beachgoers.
Water quality, a top concern for visitors, is being monitored with weekly analyses. The NCC publishes the results on its website, providing transparency and ensuring that the public stays informed about the safety and conditions of the water at all beaches.
Accessibility has also been a focal point in preparing for this season. Breton Beach at Philippe Lake stands out as the most accessible for individuals with mobility issues, featuring a gently sloping paved path leading to the beach and a water access ramp for wheelchairs. Additionally, a beach wheelchair is available upon request. Throughout the season, access mats will be installed at Blanchet, Parent, La Pêche, and Leamy beaches, further enhancing accessibility.
To facilitate access to these scenic spots, the NCC, in partnership with Transcollines, is offering free shuttle services on weekends and holidays to Meech Creek Valley and Philippe Lake’s Breton Beach until the end of October. This initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion and make it easier for more people to enjoy the natural beauty of these areas.
The NCC encourages everyone to take advantage of the beautiful beaches and amenities available this summer. For the latest updates on beach conditions, water quality, shuttle schedules, and more, please visit their website at ccn-ncc.gc.ca.
