On Wednesday, April 29, the Aylmer Food Bank hosted the first activity of its monthly Seniors in Action Program, which brings senior citizens together to participate in inclusive activities. Included were a tasty spaghetti lunch and a fun bingo afternoon at the Knights of Columbus building.
The program will have one activity a month through September, including a Hawaiian barbecue day, a museum outing, outdoor painting, and a cowboy day.
“We think it's important to get senior citizens out of their homes,” said Mercedes D’Trinidad, Director of Programs and Executive Director of the Aylmer Food Bank. “Sometimes they're isolated and don’t get a chance to share with other people and enjoy a good time.”
This program is possible thanks to $25,000 in federal funding from the New Horizons for Seniors program to help senior citizens get together and enjoy activities offered by the Aylmer Food Bank.
D’Trinidad mentioned that a lot of times when the food bank makes deliveries to senior citizens, they are one of the few people the seniors get to meet and talk to. This was a big reason for the program.
The next event on the program's calendar is a financial fraud conference, with lunch included. It will take place at the Knights of Columbus building on Thursday, May 28, at 11 am.
