Andy Rubal to light up La Basoche with explosive Cuban music show

Andy Rubal, the electrifying Cuban pianist and singer based in Montreal, will bring his acclaimed show La Clave Cubana to Gatineau’s La Basoche Cabaret on January 30. Known for his magnetic stage presence and masterful blend of Cuban song, salsa, and jazz, Rubal will perform with his six-piece band Son del Sun in a standing-room-only event that promises to turn the historic Old Aylmer venue into a celebration of rhythm and dance.

"La Clave Cubana was born from the need to explain to audiences what the Cuban clave is, the rhythmic heartbeat behind Cuban music," Rubal said. "It’s more than a show; it’s a journey into the roots of Cuban son, what people now know as salsa."

The evening will feature high-octane arrangements of Latin and Cuban classics alongside Rubal’s own compositions, including tracks from his album Dímelo Nawe and a preview of his upcoming international release Baila y Confía. Scheduled for global release on January 15 through MoonSun Musik, the album features collaborations with renowned Cuban artists such as Alexander Abreu and Manolito Simonet. "This record was born from moments of uncertainty," Rubal said. "I wanted to make music that reminds people to move, to believe, and to keep their hearts open no matter what happens."

Originally from Santiago de Cuba, Rubal has earned a strong reputation performing with celebrated artists, including Amadito Valdés of Buena Vista Social Club and Orlando “Maraca” Valle. Since relocating to Canada in 2017, he has become a prominent figure on the country’s Latin music scene, recognized for his ability to fuse classical training with infectious dance grooves.

"People can expect a dance-filled atmosphere and a lot of joy," he said. "We’re bringing the warmth and energy of Cuba to Gatineau, live, raw, and full of soul."

Tickets are available through the City of Gatineau’s ticket office at $27 for general admission and $15 for students, with variable service fees depending on purchase method. The concert is from 8:00 - 9:50 pm at 120 Rue Principale in Aylmer.

"I hope people walk away smiling, feeling hopeful, and with a stronger desire to dance," Rubal said.
