A Whim of the Weather
Last Wednesday, freezing rain fell across the region. This type of precipitation often causes significant disruptions and can even turn into a nightmare for many, depending on the duration and intensity of the event.
Have you ever wondered what impact freezing rain has on flora and fauna? Trees are particularly vulnerable: their branches bend under the weight of accumulated ice and sometimes even break. It also affects buds and twigs, which can slow growth in the spring and damage the forest canopy.
Trees’ sensitivity varies greatly depending on various factors such as age, condition, species, height, and diameter, as well as their immediate environment.
And what about its impact on animals? The consequences can be catastrophic for wildlife. Some animals whose fur or feathers get wet and then freeze lose their thermal protection. They can then suffer from hypothermia and even die.
Habitats, nests, and shelters can be destroyed by falling branches or trees. Additionally, access to food is more difficult under the layer of ice covering food sources.
In a forested area like Deschênes Park, given the large number of trees, it is easier to observe how the landscape is changing and the damage and stress this phenomenon causes to nature.
And this is just one of the many manifestations of global warming!
