A remarkable plant... Who am I?
I'm a native plant that grows on the outskirts of the Deschênes forest and produces pretty umbels of pink flowers in July and August.
First green, then brown when mature, my fruits, called follicles, open in autumn to release my seeds, which are covered with a long white silk.
The monarch butterfly caterpillar feeds exclusively on my leaves. I am essential to the survival of this species.
My silks are processed into textile fibers, notably used in outerwear for their insulating and water-repellent properties. I can also be used as stuffing for pillows and comforters. (Trans. : BA)
